The Rape Aggression Defense
(R.A.D.) classes offered by the Hillsdale County
Sheriff’s Office were launched with the goal to
train women in how to protect themselves in
“every day” situations. The training is
taught by Deputy Nathan Lambright and Dispatcher
Christine Wahtola. Deputy Lambright has
been a Road Patrol Deputy since 2007 and also
serves as a department instructor in ground
fighting, Pressure Point Control Tactics and
defensive tactics. He is a SWAT team
member and a department Crime Scene
Investigator. Dispatcher Wahtola has been
a Dispatcher with the Sheriff’s Office since
2001 and is also trained in Corrections.
This class is FOR WOMEN
ONLY who are at least 12 years
of age. The program was designed by
Lawrence Nadeau in 1989 for women. He
found martial arts defense training generically
applied to men, women, seniors and children.
A martial arts approach is excellent for
developing body mechanics, physical fitness and
confidence, but the time consuming dedication
needed to be proficient is more than most people
are willing or able to endure. In
addition, martial arts training and its
instructors are often too traditional,
regimented and ceremonial for the vast majority
of our population. The R.A.D. System is no
quick solution in and of itself but it is a
course of carefully selected defensive tactics
with helpful guidelines for continued personal
growth for women.
Our class offers risk reduction techniques for at home
as well as when you are out and about in you
daily lives. We empower women through a
four prong self defense approach by Educating,
teaching Dependency on Self, reaffirming
Decision Making Responsibility and developing
Self Realization of Power. We teach
physical defense for the majority of the class
time. We do
not make you participate in anything you do not
feel comfortable doing or are unable to
physically engage in. The
class is taught in a three day sequence,
consisting of three hour sessions per day
totaling nine hours of physical training.
As a participant, you will receive a binder of
the R.A.D. manual that is yours to keep
compliments of the Hillsdale County Sheriff’s
Office. This training manual illustrates
and breaks down all the moves you will be taught
and can be used for a quick reference. We
make no guarantees that the techniques we teach
you will work in every situation. Without
a doubt, every situation is vastly different and
this program is taught to provide you with many
options for your personal self defense.
Upon completion of our training, you will be
awarded a certificate of training.
In 2009 over 100
women were trained! We will be offering these
free classes in 2010 and encourage
you to check back here in the near future.
