The Sheriff relies on a well-trained and regulated Reserve Deputy Division to serve the residents of Hillsdale County in areas of security, special events, community activities and backup to certified police officers. While Reserve Deputies are not certified police officers, they function with the law enforcement authority extended to them as Special Deputy Sheriffs.
The Reserve Division collectively puts in more than 1,000 hours of volunteer time each year. The division must complete comprehensive training which focuses on defensive tactics training, firearms training, legal training, traffic enforcement techniques, radio communications, law enforcement ethics and other important skills.
The division is supervised by a Sheriff's Office Deputy who is given the rank of Captain while working in the capacity of Reserve commander. The division commander has the authority to appoint a Lieutenant and a Sergeant who direct the platoons and provide supervision while the reserves are on assignment. The success of many community outreach programs is a direct result of the dedication of this division.
This division is under the command of Captain Thomas Gibbons.
