The Hillsdale County Sheriff's
Office is currently staffed with
fifteen deputies who are assigned to the
patrol division. These deputies
have all attended extensive pre-service
training and are certified and licensed
by the State of Michigan Commission of
Law Enforcement Standards to perform all
the duties of a law enforcement officer
in this state.
Deputies assigned to this division are responsible for
answering all calls for service within
the jurisdictional boundaries of
Hillsdale County. These calls
include all criminal complaints and
investigations, traffic enforcement,
accident investigations, civil disputes
and serving civil papers. They are
also charged with the responsibility of
all inmate transports to the courts,
physicians and mental health care
professionals.
During 2008, the Uniform Services Division handled over
11,000 calls for service. The
calls for service continue to rise each
year and the division continues to
strive for excellence in our service to
the citizens of Hillsdale County.
It is worthy to note that the requests
for service have continued to rise while
the staff numbers in the Uniform
Division have remained the same for over
a decade. This creates a
never-ending challenge that we will
continue to meet in order to provide
continuous services.
The Uniform Division also strives to stay current with
ever-changing crime trends and laws that
are also rapidly changing. Each
deputy receives numerous hours of
training in areas such as firearms,
legal updates, self-defense, drunk
driving detection and many other areas.
The division also serves citizens
by presenting numerous training sessions
to the public free of charge. During
2008, many citizens received training
from the Hillsdale County Sheriff's
Office in areas such as self-defense
for women (the RAD program,
methamphetamine awareness and scam
prevention. All of these training
sessions are held to help reach out to
the community in a partnership
to make our county a safer
place to live and raise a family.
In summary, the uniform division experienced many
challenges which were successfully met
in 2008. We continue to improve
where possible and keep in our minds
that we are entrusted with a very
important task: to keep the citizens of
Hillsdale County safe and secure.
