The Sheriff relies on a
well-trained and regulated Reserve
Deputy Division to carry on the
tradition and constitutionally-based
Office of Sheriff. This division
collectively puts in more than 1,000
hours of volunteer time each year.
The men and women of the Reserve
Division are called upon to serve during
some of the most volatile times in our
community’s history. Reserve
Deputies are not certified police
officers and as such have limited law
enforcement authority which is extended
to them as Special Deputy Sheriffs.
They are a great tool used for security,
special events, community activities,
and provide backup to certified police
officers when they are on patrol.
The Reserve Division is comprised of 18 men and women
who freely give of their time to improve
their community and are willing to risk
their life fighting crime. This
division must complete a comprehensive 8
week academy which focuses on defensive
tactics training, firearms training,
legal training, traffic enforcement
techniques, radio communication, law
enforcement ethics and other important
skills used as Reserve Deputy Sheriffs.
Upon successful completion and
graduation, the cadet provides their own
firearm, duty gear and the Sheriff’s
Office purchases the uniforms and
related apparel. A Reserve Academy
is held once every two years and as
members retire, resign or take
employment full-time within a police
department, the Sheriff will make
appointments to backfill the positions
to maintain a minimum of 18 members.
The division is supervised by a Sheriff’s Office Deputy
who is given the rank of Captain while
working in the capacity of Reserve
commander. The division commander
has the authority to appoint a
Lieutenant and a Sergeant who direct the
platoons and provide supervision while
the reserves are on assignment.
The success of many community outreach
programs is a direct result of the
dedication of this division.
The Reserve Division is under the command of Captain
Thomas Gibbons.
